What Is Nostalgia?

Homesickness, or nostalgia, is a longing not so much for people as for the natural landscape of one's homeland: its forests, mountains and hills, rivers, lakes, the blue of its skies, its sunsets—in short, for the whole environment with which a person has grown together, and on leaving which he feels that he has left behind a part of himself. (Antanas Maceina) Below is a poem by Salomėja Nėri s, one of Lithuania's most celebrated poets, who suffered more than perhaps any other Lithuanian intellectual from being separated from her homeland and, above all, from being accused of treason (rightly or wrongly, that is not for us to judge). Bloodied and plundered, You stand before my eyes... I would walk a hundred miles on foot Until I saw you living once again. Whether orchards there are blossoming, Or fruit hangs heavy on the bough, Or yellow leaves are falling, I shall return to you on my knees Through rain, hard frost, and winter's cold... Like the grass that grows in...

Kas yra nostalgija?

Tėvynės pasiilgimas, arba nostalgija, yra pasiilgimas ne tiek žmonių, kiek tėvynės gamtos: miškų, kalnų bei kalnelių, upių, ežerų, dangaus mėlynės, saulėlydžio, apskritai visos aplinkos, su kuria žmogus yra suaugęs ir kurią palikęs jis jaučiasi palikęs savo paties dalį.  (Antanas Maceina) Sukruvinta ir apiplėšta Ji stovi man akyse…

– Ir kris jų lapeliai Nuo saulės ir vėjo – Kaip smėlio saujelės – Ant mano širdies – –  Follow me on Substack

Salomėja Nėris: the compulsive obsession of disappearing - it will fall on my chest

In the pagan sensibility of Salomėja Nėris, whom we discussed here a few days ago, there is a theme that recurs like a nightmare: “One day I won’t be here.” The obsession with dying. This excruciating poem is one of many examples. Manęs dar nebuvo - Alyvos žydėjo - - Manęs nebebus jau - Jos vėliai žydės - Ir kris jų lapeliai Nuo saulės ir vėjo, Kaip smėlio saujelės, Ant mano širdies - No, I wasn't there when the lilac bloomed No, no sign of me will be there when it again will bloom and the little leaves will fall of sun and wind they will die and handfuls of sand will fall on my chest

Praying to Lithuania - Salomėja Nėris the most beautiful voice of Lithuanian poetry

Lithuania is a land that many do not even know where it is. A land of long winters and short summers, of snow and frost, ice cold wind and rain and scarce sunshine. One of the birds, present almost everywhere, ungainly, that plagues cities and countryside is the crow. Its cawing is everywhere, his scratching under the trees in a perennial search of scarce food, in a land so stingy with the sun, is almost ruthless. And it is surprising that this animal and this nation can be sung by poetry, by an equally tormented poetess: Salomėja Nėris. A poet who, it is said, betrayed her homeland to be on Stalin's side. But her poems exude a sacred love for her land which she celebrates in a pagan way, turning the natural elements into sacred entities that speak to blood and bones of every living creature, Here is an example of her poetry, of her great love and the nostalgic nostos, the merciless but nonetheless yearned-for return that will welcome her post-mortem . A beautiful example of poet...

Pills of Lithuanian literature - Salomėja Nėris (poetess)

Salomėja Nėris (real name Salomėja Bačinskaitė-Bučienė) is the most important poet of the XX century Lithuanian literature (1904-1945). Her poetry is called išpažintinę lyriką (literallyç confessional lyrics), i.e. intimistic poetry, in other words, a kind of poetry which is autobiographical, focused on real personal facts and with a low degree of fiction, Which could be linked to what can be called ego-documents: memoirs, diaries, letters. The most common themes of her poetry are his land. her return to her beloved land (she lived in Russia since 1941), nature as a body that extends its reasons to her body, plants that flower or turn yellow, spring, winter. cold and frost, repentance, death. And winds, there are so many poems about wind in her poetry. Here is a good example of her typical themes, the lyrics  " diemedžiu žydėsiu " Aš diemedžiu žydėsiu.

Forse lei come me viveva in un non-dove.

Princas Vilniuje Fabrizio Ulivieri
