On Non-Relativizable Fundamental Philosophical Questions

When you evaluate something historically, you relativize it. At the very moment you place fundamental philosophical questions within a historical context, you deprive them of their philosophical value and relativize their significance. The same applies to truth: it cannot be relativized. Truth is one. Likewise, fundamental philosophical questions belong neither to a particular time nor to a particular place.[1] It is with such a principled question that the Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad begins. कस्मिन्नु भगवो विज्ञाते सर्वमिदं विज्ञातं भवतीति kasmin nu bhagavo vijñāte sarvam idaṃ vijñātaṃ bhavatīti O Blessed One Sir, by knowing this [locally] does the [idam] All become known? In other words, if I know this (hic et nunc), I will know everything else. If this (hic et nunc) comes into being, everything else will come into being as well. In Antanas Maceina's thought, this fundamental structure of the question of knowledge was linked to suffering. Maceina discovered suffering as the primary drivi...

On Boredom

Many times I’ve listened to Paolo Sorrentino, the film director, talk about boredom, which he ultimately sees as something positive in human life. A creative act, in the end. I’m not sure I agree. When you are bored, you lose the creative force that generates motivation, or even anxiety. When you are bored, you drift. You float. You remain alive, but with a sense of disgust. At least that’s how it is for me. I am bored, that is, I am disgusted, with this world of lies and emptiness, of cultural emptiness. Ninety-eight percent of what is published, posted, or produced is crap, or at best inane chatter. And because I am bored, I lose the sense of my own existence. I lose the meaning of my everyday life. Of course, this cannot be merely personal. I believe in the Zeitgeist . What I feel and think today is not what I felt or thought twenty years ago, nor what I will feel or think ten years from now. Time changes us, unavoidably. We think, and we are, according to what the esprit du t...

Explaining the Unexplainable in Macbeth

The problem of interpreting Macbeth’s shift At a first reading, one remains baffled by Macbeth’s transformation: a brave warrior and loyal subject becomes the bloody murderer of his king, without any plausible reason. Yet everything becomes comprehensible if we read this transformation through Porphyry’s philosophy of the incorporeal and of ὑπόστασις as presented in his Sententiae . In Macbeth, evil is transmitted from the witches to Macbeth not as a substance but as a derivative and relational ὑπόστασις  - a secondary mode of being that becomes contiguous to him. Without this hypostatic mediation, his passage from loyal subject to regicide would remain inexplicable. Macbeth does not simply “decide” to become evil. Nor is he “persuaded” in a psychological sense. Nor is he corrupted by rational argument. The witches, by proximity - by ὑπόστασις - impart to him a mode of existence that is neither substance nor essence, but influence: a secondary being, a power that does not mix with ...

The Masses Are Not Asking to Be Saved

There is much talk about "awakening" people, about the salvation of the masses, without considering a simple truth: the masses do not want to be saved. The mass is, by definition, something to be kneaded, shaped, and moulded—it exists to be acted upon. The essence of the masses is formed from a single ingredient: complicity [1]. Complicity means accepting guilt without acknowledging it, acting not from personal conviction but simply following orders. It removes the sense of personal responsibility, for in complicity, one merely complies. But who asks for this compliance? Others. These "Others"—and perhaps "that" would be a more accurate term—are not individual humans in a moral or thoughtful sense but extensions of the collective mindless will. They are complicit but without awareness of their complicity.Complicity, in this sense, is participation in an endless chain of obedience, a chain without a visible end because the end is deliberately obscured. Ev...

We live and experience selective times

We live and experience selective times, Deo gratias, where the evil that is hitting humanity has the power to select and separate and show who deserves to know the truth and who does not, ABOVE ALL who is structured to understand the truth and who does not. Saint Augustin, once again, has the best words to express it. (De Civitare Dei, I, 8,2) “For, in the same fire, gold gleams and straw smokes; under the same flail the stalk is crushed and the grain thres...

Hatred without borders (intruding and altering an actor performance)

At videns Iesus, indigne tulit et ait illis: “ Sinite parvulos venire ad me. There is in this world unnatural hatred and doggedness against children. But who benefits from all this? Kids are a blessing for the soul. Kids are the most disruptive weaponry humanity can count on. But I truly tell you, we are living in times where humanity has to be destroyed. A new unknown humanity is meant to replace the humanity we knew so far and we lived in. Those who want this to happen hate Christ, hate the Catholic Church and they are replacing it with a new Universal Church, a Church that no longer belongs to Christ. And kids are a blessing, kids can heal and repair humanity, they are the antibodies of humanity. Kids are the Old Firm Catholic Ch...
