A unique book that I love: The "Vita Nova" by Dante Alighieri

Io spero di dicer di lei quello che mai non fue detto d'alcuna The "Vita Nova" by Dante Alighieri is definitely an outdated book for the times we live in. Outdated mainly for one reason: it speaks of Amore, Love, (with capital letter). An idealization and interiorization of Love in order to transcend the factual and intrinsic love for a woman (Beatrice) and become the Motor itself of Dante's poetry. A unique book in its structure: the story of Dante’s love for Beatrice until Beatrice’s death (just perceived in a dreamlike vision). The painful history of Dante's dolor for this unhappy love that in the end becomes the Spirit itself of Dante's poetry. Prose sonnets and canzoni are mixed so as to tell us about a world that unfortunately is centuries away from our raw modernity: a world of Beauty and Love . A book that should be read by those who are in the process of a trip to Florence. A book to be read before going to that city, a book that will enable peopl...

A short essay on daily life - mistaken beliefs

Carlo Goldoni, the eighteenth-century Italian playwright who, it is said, invented the Commedia dell'Arte , in his comedy La Pamela wrote ‘He only half dies who leaves an image of himself in his sons.’ But is it really true this Goldoni's adage? When my daughters were little I think I committed some continued injustices on them, even though those little injustices did not look like injustices when I was perpetrating them. Rather, they looked like little things, superficial things dictated by the exuberance of a father who loved so much their daughters. And they loved me, I believed...But did they really love me or that was just a way of accepting their father in an unswerving and occasionally undiscerning scheme of children who are adapting themselves to the image I had created for them? I think it was this last case. I used to talk to them about me, my life, my dreams, my problems, my sufferings, my joys, my disillusions...again and again, I was repeating the story of my lif...

Silvia begins telling her story

In my growing up with you, father, I now think there was an autistic quality. I offer this not as a criticism but as a diagnosis if it interests you. As a child, of course, you loved me and I loved you, but, even then, you treated me as you waited to be treated. Perhaps it started unconsciously, but you slowly translated me into an inscrutable object of your vision. And in fact, we were having inscrutable commerce with each other's hearts, during those perfect days. That is the way I felt indeed year after year, above all after turning eighteen. After that point, in fact, I realized how separate we were, two enterprises on the go, yours and mine. What your enterprise was I couldn't say, but it was opaque to me. The more I gained my life the more I felt it opaque, and distant. I am sorry father to say that, but that was what was disquieting me, and I couldn't say it to you. It lacked the courage. You were like a distant fading away image that I was unable to stop and grab.

Interview in English with the Italian Writer Fabrizio Ulivieri

What "Love, šaltibarščiai and red tomatoes" is about?

Love, šaltibarščiai and red tomatoes - text analysis and the nature of love

This book was written between 2016 and 2017, in six months. Published in 2018. One of the advantages (or disadvantages) of talking about a book that has been given to the press almost one year ago is that you forget (at least me) all of what you wrote. In this lapse of time you took a break from the tension that created you to write the book, because of reading the text ad infinitum to find errors, mistakes and things that did not work, which almost led to hate what you wrote; because of proofreading, which collapsed you into the stress you seemed to have forgotten - and which perhaps, in my case at least, causes you more stress than when you wrote it. Finally, this long pause brings you out of that excessive accumulation of energy and concentration that prevents you from any detached reading. But reading again this text one year later leads you to evaluate the text according to a range of possibilities that you didn't have before, brings you in a universe that you didn'...

The door

- Why did you stop loving me? - I don’t know ...so far we have avoided talking nonsense. Why now, then? Sabatina tried to hug him. - Please, stop it. Not now. I have to go. In 30 minutes I have the train. Sabatina felt trapped. - Where are you going today? - she asked him. - To Rome, I have a meeting with Nenni. - Will you be home at midnight? - I don’t know. Maybe. To overnight in Rome is too expensive. Sabatina felt a feeling of desperation grow inside. She could not speak. She never knew how to speak. She only knew how to be silent. And she was used to be silent in her life. It was November, outside. It was raining and it was cold. How she hated those days. Silvano opened the door. The ice of the tramontana entered. "Ciao" he said. Sabatina did not answer. Silvano remained for a while undecided. Then he crossed the threshold and shut the door with anger. Sabatina stayed in the entrance in front of the slammed door. She felt defeated. Betrayed. ...

"Amore, šaltibarščiai e pomodori rossi" a censored novel

It is a question that I have often asked myself, for a long time. I felt that it existed but I could only grasp indirect evidence of a censorship that operates in virtue of filters, by delimiting the areas and conditions to which big publishers adhere, by selecting  texts for getting published (only authors who guarantee a certain number of sales, who are presented by, who have been selected by, who write according to certain models and styles, who avoid references to ... who do not reflect an ideological editorial line different from the one they support). I was looking for the speck and I did not notice the beam I had in my eye. Already with "Rugíle" (my previous novel) I had detected a situation of discomfort that the text procured for the explicitly treated sexual themes. Certainly there was no censorship by any state authority but there was a wall that was often raised by those who were unwilling to admit sex in its crudity, in its ability to punch hard in you...

"Love, šaltibarščiai and red tomatoes. Biography of a love", by Fabrizio Ulivieri. A book that will keep you engaged in Love.

On June, 2018 in Italy comes out "Love, šaltibarščiai and red tomatoes. Biography of a love", by Fabrizio Ulivieri. (Cover photo by Živilė Abrutytė). Prospero Editore, Milano. It is the biography of Austėja, a Lithuanian girl of the post-liberation generation, which was bred in 1991 after the soviet attack to Vilnius Radio and Television tower and the killing of 14 civilians. Austėja, daughter of that generation, loves Italy and and is naturally averse to Lithuania. But at the end of the book she will find out her love for Lithuania which is genetically inscribed in her mind and therefore impossible to be erased. It is a beautiful description of the feelings that are established in this relationship of love between Austėja and her Italian companion who comes to live in Vilnius, driven by his strong "amore" for Austėja, a love born in Florence where they met. A text that illustrates well the continuous contrast regarding the way of perceiving between two co...

Abstract of "Love šaltibarščiai and red tomatoes - biography of a love from inside " The book will be issued in June 2018

LIES It is almost a natural state that love causes a change in life, and no one questions it. What is less natural is that a city or a land may change your life. I refer to a city and to a land that you do not even love too much, or you are not too enamored of it but you end up there just pushed by the events of life and discover another universe...
